Three Injured in Anne Arundel Motorcycle Accident

Earlier this week in Anne Arundel County, three people were injured in a motorcycle accident involving a Toyota Avalon and a Harley Davidson motorcycle. According to a report by WUSA 9, the accident occurred just after two in the afternoon at the intersection of Davidsonville Road and Governor Bridge Road.

Evidently, the motorcyclist was heading south on Davidsonville Road when the driver of the Toyota pulled out in front of him. The driver was waiting at a flashing red signal to turn left onto Davidsonville Road. However, since the driver pulled out right in front of the motorcycle, the motorcyclist had no time to stop and collided with the Toyota.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Both the driver and the passenger of the Toyota were also taken to the hospital. However, they were admitted with only minor injuries.

An initial police investigation determined that the cause of the accident was likely the Toyota driver’s failure to yield the right-of-way to the motorcyclist. Police do not believe that speed, nor drugs or alcohol, were a contributing factor in the accident. Police did note, however, that the motorcyclist was wearing non-compliant headgear at the time of the accident.

Maryland Motorcycle Accidents

Luckily, no one was fatally injured in last week’s motorcycle accident. However, each year there are dozens of fatal motorcycle accidents across the state of Maryland. Only some of these involve any fault on the part of the motorcyclist.

For example, there was little that the motorcyclist in the accident described above could have done to avoid the collision. When a car fails to yield the right-of-way to a motorcycle, often the motorcyclist has little choice but to crash into the car, drive off the road, or lay the bike down.

In each of these situations, the motorcyclist is likely to get seriously injured and have costly medical bills and other financial costs of recovery, on top of the mental and physical toll the accident takes on the victim. Thankfully, Maryland state law allows for motorcycle accident victims to recover from the person or people who were responsible for their injuries in a lawsuit based on the offending driver’s negligence.

However, the other driver’s insurance company will not likely concede that the driver was at fault and may contest every fact alleged by the accident victim. It is for this reason that an experienced Maryland personal injury attorney is a necessary ally for any potential motorcycle injury plaintiff.
